The Revolutionary Behind the Words

Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992) was a gay liberation activist, self-identified drag queen, and one of the most prominent figures in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Known as the "mayor of Christopher Street," she was a welcoming presence in Greenwich Village who co-founded the radical activist group Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera.

Johnson understood that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights wasn't just about acceptance—it was about survival, dignity, and the right to exist without fear. She was also an AIDS activist with ACT UP and a beloved figure in New York's art scene, modeling for Andy Warhol and performing with drag troupes like Hot Peaches.
