The Icon Behind the Words
James Baldwin (1924-1987) was a gay Black writer and civil rights activist whose essays, novels, and speeches challenged America to confront its deepest truths about race, sexuality, and identity. From Notes of a Native Son to Giovanni's Room, Baldwin's work broke barriers and opened minds, influencing both the civil rights and gay liberation movements.
His characters—like all of us—searched for self-acceptance in a world that wasn't always ready for their truth. Baldwin understood that sometimes you have to build your own table when you're not invited to sit at theirs.
