The Warrior Behind the Words

Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was a self-described "Black, lesbian, feminist, socialist, mother, warrior, poet" who dedicated her life to confronting injustice in all its forms. She believed there could be "no hierarchy of oppressions" among those fighting for liberation.

As a master poet and intersectional feminist before the term was widely known, Lorde's work explored the complex intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class. Her powerful voice helped shape both the civil rights and feminist movements, founding Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press and serving as New York State Poet Laureate until her death.
